Why Living in Chicago is Awesome: Pros of Living in a Big City

Since I was a little girl, I always dreamed about living in a big city. To me, they represent a place with endless opportunities and a chance for personal growth. In 2019 my biggest wish came true and I moved to Chicago for 1 year. During my time in Chicago I definitely became happier and more motivated to do some really exciting things in my life. There are a lot of advantages to living in a big city and in this blog post you will find out why you should try it one day. Even though big city life offers plenty of benefits, it is not for everyone. Some people prefer living in a more quiet environment and are finding big city’s life repulsive or simply too much. In the end it’s up to you and your lifestyle when deciding where to relocate.

1. Diverse neighborhoods

What I really love about Chicago are the diverse neighborhoods. All of them have their own distinct “personalities” and individual things to offer locals and visitors. West Loop is an old industrial area turned into a place full of really good restaurants and bars. It is home to many delicious pizza, burger and pasta places. Wicker Park is known as a hipster neighborhood with many unique local bookshops, cafes, galleries and cocktail bars. Pilsen is the neighborhood on the city’s Lower West Side where I lived and I loved it. It has a Mexican-American community with incredible food and art. You have to try tacos there! Pilsen is also home to many gorgeous murals painted by famous street artists.

2. Big variety of restaurants and shops

One thing I miss the most about Chicago is the variety of restaurants and shops that the city has to offer. For me this is one of the main reasons why I love big cities since I’m a foodie and I love shopping! If you’re planning a trip to Chicago you should definitely stop by at Michigan Avenue where you will find a huge number of shopping options and fashion outlets.

Chicago is definitely not a stranger in the culinary scene either. Whether you’re interested in Asian food, Mediterranean cuisine or famous Chicago-style hot dogs and deep-dish pizza, you have plenty of options to choose and they will leave your taste buds craving for more.

3. It’s easy to fly anywhere

Most of the big cities have their own airports with international and domestic flights. This is one of the biggest advantages living in a big city since it’s really easy to fly anywhere. Chicago has 2 airports, one major international one (O’Hare) and a smaller one (Midway), which is mainly a Southwest dominated airport. According to Airfare Watch Dog O’Hare is the world’s sixth busiest airport. Nearly a quarter-million of passengers are traveling through this airport on a daily basis. Crazy!

4. A wide array of entertainment options

One big difference between life in a big city and life in a rural area is the variety of entertainment options. There is always something fun going on and you don’t have the time to be bored. You have the opportunity to experience new things every day. Concerts, museums, festivals, culinary events are just a few of many entertainment options. Chicago has no shortage of special events going on every week and weekends throughout the year. One of the most famous music festivals in Chicago is definitely Lollapalooza. It started in 1991 and has grown into one of the world’s largest. It takes place in Grant Park every year during the last weekend of July.

No matter what your interests, big cities definitely provide endless options of entertainment for locals and tourists.

5. Social events on every corner

One of the pros of living in a big city is a possibility for unlimited social interactions on a daily basis. Finding a social event to attend and networking is really easy and basically an effortless task. You can join different sports clubs, try dance lessons, cooking classes, or even attend parties at museums or art galleries, and donate time to a charity. Living in a big city allows you to expand your network of personal and professional relationships. Learning about other cultures and sharing the same interests will help you grow into a more open-minded person and gain a new perspective. During my time in Chicago I really wanted to attend as many events as I could. For example, my partner and I went to Bachata class, visited After Dark event in the Art Institute of Chicago and danced our asses off at many concerts. We definitely had a lot of fun!

6. It’s full of inspiration

If you’re looking for new inspiration for your work, or you maybe want to start a new hobby, then visiting or living in a big city is something you should do. Cities will inspire you to stay motivated and keep chasing your dreams. The energy that big cities give is like no other. The people you meet and the things you experience will help you on your way to achieving something great.

Living in a big city will help you leave your comfort zone. You will be “forced” to push yourself to a completely new level and that will help you succeed in many areas of your life.

Living in Chicago is awesome!

Chicago is definitely one of the greatest cities and if you visit it or even move there you will be a part of a very vibrant and positive environment. Windy City has an amazing atmosphere that will inspire you to do all of the things that you’ve always wanted.

There are many reasons why living in a big city like Chicago is something you should experience at least once in your life if possible. From delicious food, a wide variety of events to diverse neighborhoods and endless possibilities for networking, these are the things that you can only get when living in a big metropolitan area.

Till next time,
